plugging in a diesel engine, what temp? and for how long?
I just got a 1985 turbo diesel mercedes staion wagon. I live in colorado where this time of year it drops in the 20′s and teens or single digits at night. What i need to know is at what temp “F” do i need to plug it in at night. And for how long? I have street parking so its kinda hard to do it all night long.
I’ve seen post that state anything below freezing and some that say anything below 20 degrees and some that say below zero? also recomendations of all night long to just an hour before i need to leave.
Any help would be awesome. Thanks

I’ve driven Mercedes diesels for years, and I’ve used the block heaters on only one of them. My 1984 300SD (same engine as your wagon) has 649,800 miles on the original engine, and I have to plug it in overnight in the winter, or it simply will not start in the morning. I’m in North Carolina, so we don’t have the harsh cold that you have, but at 20 degrees, I’m plugging in the car overnight. Where I’m at, I never plug in the 240D, but it only has 353K on it. If you can’t plug it in overnight for whatever reason, you need to find some way of plugging it in at least for half the night. If you could leave it plugged in overnight, it sure wouldn’t hurt anything. It would just make it that much easier to start in the morning. Just experiment with it and see how it acts in cold weather.
