The book explores the idea that if you take a civilized creature (a house dog) and put it into a savage environment, it must either become wild itself or die. The story is Buck learning to adapt.
It is similar to The Lord of the Flies where children become savages.
Buck must get in touch with the way of his ancestors– the first wolf-dogs domesticated by primitive humans.
Spitz is the alpha male of the dog team until Buck defeats him.
Hal Charles and Mercedes are civilized humans who cannot adapt as did Perrault and Francois, or more importantly John Thornton, who is a lot like Buck.
A really good movie version (among so many terrible ones) has Rutger Hauer as John Thornton and is narrated by Richard Dreyfuss. See that after reading the book and it will help you to understand more.
If you have any specific questions, post them too and I’ll try to help.
